For universities ARIs offer insight into specific policy areas where Government departments - and other official bodies - are keen to hear research evidence or insights.

This can help to align major bids for research funding, but can also help identify key civil service teams involved in the national policy formulation process. They certainly offer excellent openings for building policy impact pathways.

In September 2023, a new ARI database was launched with £55,000 funding from UKRI and GO-Science to help make ARIs more accessible (previously the questions were buried away in large PDFs). The database currently contains more than 2,300 ARIs.

Our new report uses exclusive qualitative and quantitative data to help you identify fresh opportunities for national-level policy engagement, supporting your REF 2029 policy engagement and impact ambitions by;

  • Revealing the ‘untapped’ Government policy themes currently going under the radar

  • Helping you see where policy areas are already crowded with academic engagement

  • Signposting ‘black hole’ email inboxes that never get a response.

  • Identifying sweet spots where your research strengths and under-engaged ARI topics overlap.

  • Revealing which peer group universities and research bodies are already engaging with Government department ARI questions - and which aren’t.

  • Providing informed advice on how best to engage with published ARIs.
